Reno pest control

We Nevada's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Reno rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Reno pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
  • Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
  • Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
  • Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

Reno Rodent Removal Tip:

Will a rat bite a sleeping baby?
One of the most commonly widespread rodent stories out there is that it will willingly and viciously lash out at babies. You've probably heard the story about the rat that chewed off a baby's face, and no doubt, it's filled you with the expectable terror.

It's because of stories like these that most people tend to feel this strong sense of repulsion at the mere notion of rats. It's also this particular fear of the alleged viciousness of rats that drives humans to hunt, maim, and kill any rodent they spot.

But are these stories actually true? Will a rat attack a sleeping baby?
It could, yes. Down the years, there have been stories in the news of infants discovered with rat bites or other rat-related injuries, such as scratching, particularly on their face. However, this is highly unlikely, and such instances are quite rare.

See, rats are generally non-aggressive creatures and don't automatically attack any creature they set their sight on. They're particularly wary of lashing out at humans for the rather obvious reason that a human tends to be much larger and much stronger than a rat, and thus an undesirable enemy. But it doesn't stop there. Rats rarely, if ever, attack other animals, much smaller than humans. For example, if there is a rat in the house, a lot of homeowners worry it will lash out at their beloved pet. However, rats don't normally do this, and it's not out of fear, necessarily, but rather because it serves them better, from a survival perspective, to run rather than fight.

So as a general rule, rats will generally run away from conflict, rather than engage. When a rat does attack either a human or an animal, it's because it sees no other way and feels threatened.

rodent trapping That being said, there have been instances of a rat biting a human being. And in those cases, it's usually been either a baby, an elderly person, or an immobilized person. When they do attack, they logically go for those humans who can't fight back. This is why babies constitute a particularly good target.

But as we mentioned earlier, rats tend to stay away from humans and don't go near them if it's possible to avoid them.

So why do rats bite sleeping babies? Where does this urban legend come from?
The reason why a rat will rarely bite a sleeping baby (or any other sleeping human) is that they have fallen asleep with food residue around their faces. Most famously, babies are known to drool or vomit during their sleep, and the rats are attracted to this, which is how they end up biting the poor child. See, even in these rare instances, it's not as such an act of aggression, but merely an accident as the rat is trying to get the food it needs.

Bottom Line - Your Baby is Probably Safe
You see, for a rat to attack a baby, the rat first needs to be in the crib's vicinity, and luckily, there are quite a few things you can do to rat-proof your home. One is to keep your home clean and tidy, always making sure to store food and leftovers securely, in a manner where a rat can't access them. Another thing you can do is regularly inspect the home (e.g. the walls, roof, attic, etc.) for signs of rat infestation, as well as for cracks that may potentially constitute entry points for the rodent.

To sum it all up, no, a rat is unlikely to bite your baby while it is sleeping.
